I had a very disappointing experience with Old Town Reykjavik Hotel. I booked a 6-night stay and communicated in advance that I would be arriving a day late. The hotel acknowledged this, so I expected a smooth check-in process. I also asked about early check-in since I would be arriving early, but was told check-in was strictly at 2 PM. That was disappointing, especially since I had already paid for the previous night. What made things worse is that “check-in” turned out to be nothing more than receiving a message with instructions to access the room—something that could have easily been provided earlier. When I arrived around 12:30 PM, there was a staff member cleaning in the lobby. I waited respectfully before approaching her. After about 20 minutes, I asked if I could check in, and she said she could help. I went to grab my bags, came back, and she was gone. From that point, things went downhill. I waited over an hour in the lobby with no assistance. I called every contact number provided multiple times—no answer. I even reached out through Hotels.com, and while it took some time to get connected to a live agent, even they were unable to reach the hotel staff. At that point, I had no choice but to book another hotel nearby for 5 nights. Four hours later, I finally received a message with check-in instructions—long after I had already made other arrangements. This experience showed a complete lack of communication, accountability, and basic customer service.

Meget billigt hotel lige i centrum, så havde ikke de store forventninger til standen. Værelset var småt, men fint og rent nok, trods at det var slidt. Fair nok til prisen. Det var straks værre med de delte bad og toilet faciliteter - fordelt på hver etage. Den ene etages toilet var stoppet med afføring, den næste etages toiletter havde ikke toiletpapir. Dette er efter min mening fuldstændigt uacceptabelt at der ikke løbende sikres at alt virker, når så mange mennesker skal deles om det. Jeg så på intet tidspunkt noget personale, eller oversigt over 'sidst rengjort'.

Läget var det bästa med boendet. Det är väldigt centralt och gångavstånd till det mesta. Bilderna här på hotell.com stämmer inte helt med verkligheten. Det finns ingen reception och ingen personal att kontakta på plats. Skrev mail och då svarade de snabbt. Frukost ingår inte och det finns inget kön eller möjlighet att förvara mat. Det finns en kaffemaskin och en mikrovågsugn.

We stayed for three nights, but the room was not cleaned during our stay. There was no staff available at the reception, and the coffee machine on the ground floor was not working. Overall, it was a disappointing experience. There are shared bathrooms, which was not mentioned on the site. It was my worst and most disappointing experience, I would not recommend this hotel to any of my known.

The room was clean, albeit a bit small. The walls are practically paper thin so bring a pair of noise cancelling headphones. Despite the noise, it is a perfectly nice place to stay and relatively inexpensive, as well as being in a great location. If you are on a budget, then it is worth staying here.

Now called Old Town and not Kastali, I found the hostel to be in a great location, quiet despite the being well occupied, the rooms fine, and the bathrooms kept clean the entire time I was there. Pretty nice, actually.

The place was not open!! The police told us the owner was no longer there and was being investigated. We had to find alternative accommodation at our cost after a long trip from England
