3. Boriam Temple

Perched high on Geumsan Mountain, Boriam Temple is an impressive Buddhist complex. You’ll be awestruck by the ornate decorations inside this centuries-old temple, as well as the stunning architecture on the outside. Set into the mountain rocks, it’s a beautiful and peaceful place. Admire the small Buddha statues on rocks and in caves, and the huge Seawater Avalokitesvara Boddhisattva standing majestically.
Hike the temple’s trails that overlook a green carpet of dense forest stretching for miles towards the sea. Be prepared for lots of walking and climbing. The 1 km walk from the car park is steep and there are lots of steps at the temple, so be sure to wear comfortable shoes.

4. Mijo

Head to the south-east corner of Namhae and the charming fishing port of Mijo awaits. Arrive early for the morning auction and market, where fishermen unload their boats and sell their overnight hauls. You’ll see rows of brightly coloured crates full of shiny silver anchovies, black seabream and rockfish, and the salty sea and fish scents linger in the air.
Stroll along the waterfront and you’ll find seafood restaurants serving up authentic Korean dishes. Try the anchovy ssambap, which is rice wrapped in leaves, for a freshly prepared treat. If you’re in Mijo in May, check out the annual anchovy and seafood festival too. It’s an amazing culinary experience, with a fun seafood quiz and an unusual, seafood-related magic show.

5. Namhae Pyeonbaek Recreational Forest

Escape to Namhae Pyeonbaek Recreational Forest for a rejuvenating hike in nature. Over half of this huge forest is covered in cypress and fir trees, so you’ll get stunning scenery on every trail. It’s known for its secluded, wooden cabins straight out of a fairy tale. Locals love spending a cosy weekend here, surrounded by delightful flora and fauna, to recharge their batteries.
Head to the observatory for island views and photo opportunities. It’s 1 hour’s walk from the entrance, but well worth it. You can spot storks, otters and swans along the trail, as well as pretty orchids. If you’re feeling creative, try the woodworking classes too. With hands-on guidance, you’ll learn how to craft pieces from cypress trees.

6. Darangyi Village

Darangyi Village is located on the southern tip of Namhae and it’s home to some of South Korea’s most photographed rice paddies. Stretching across layer after layer in the steep cliffs, they’re a spectacular sight, and there are over 100 steps to climb to access them.
The seafood restaurants are highly recommended, and you’ll get fantastic vistas over the rice fields and sea as you’re dining. Check out the fun events calendar too. In summer, you can try your hand at rice planting, then digging up sweet potatoes with local farmers in October. 7. Seolli Skywalk
A unique observatory and delightful cafe

Thrill-seekers will love Seolri Skywalk for its dizzying height, panoramic views and friendly cafe. This huge, red and white cantilever bridge stretches almost 80 metres into the sea. Stroll along the glass-bottomed walkway and look down to see the coastal cliffs and cobalt-blue water below.
True daredevils should try the swing at the end of the walkway. At 36 metres high, you can dangle your legs over the edge of the skywalk as the waves pound against the cliffs below you. You’ll swing into the vast open space with the sea stretching out for miles before your eyes. Plan to arrive later in the day as the views are even more sensational at sunset.

Seolli Skywalk
8. Imjinseong Fortress

Climb up the hill to Imjinseong Fortress and you’ll be rewarded with far-reaching views. The fortress was built in the late 16th century during the Japanese invasions of Korea, but you can only see the remains of the site nowadays. Huge stone blocks at the east and west gates serve as reminders of this region’s rich history.
Once you’ve walked around the ruins, enjoy the magnificent, panoramic vistas of the symmetrical fields below and the glistening blue sea in the distance. This secluded spot is great for photos, but the path leading to the fortress is narrow and often overgrown, so take your time driving down it. The small car park and admission to the fortress are both free.

Imjinseong Fortress
9. Namhae Exile Museum
A beautiful site for history buffs

Namhae Exile Museum takes you on a sobering journey to discover the literary works of the region’s most famous exiles and the lives they led. Many prominent writers and politicians were sent to Namhae during the Joseon dynasty, from the 1400s onwards, and you can browse exhibits of the art, songs and writing they produced in exile.
Although these literary works have a sad theme, the museum is modern, light and pristine, making it a joy to walk around. It’s full of colourful sculptures and detailed explanations on the exhibits, so it’s a must-see venue for those interested in Korean history and culture. Try to organise your visit to the museum on a Wednesday when admission is free.

10. Namhae Bridge
A famous bridge surrounded by rich, green landscapes

Cross Namhae Bridge, which connects the island with the mainland, and you’ll get magnificent views all around you. You can take Instagram-worthy photos of this tall, red suspension bridge set against the blue water below and the surrounding lush, green landscapes of rolling hills and mountains. In spring, the surrounding roads fill with cherry blossoms for an even more dramatic backdrop.
The bridge runs parallel to the more modern Noryang Bridge, with its impressive white tower structure, and you can get pictures of the 2 bridges together from the shoreline. Check out the exhibits on display as you reach the island of Namhae too. They show the history of the bridge, and it’s a lovely viewpoint, especially at sunset.
