The condition of Room 203 in Ash&9th (San Diego), where I booked Dec 1st to 6th and actually stayed on Dec 1st to 5th, was problematic. Specifically: * The heater did not function properly — it was not warm, made loud noises, and was difficult to turn on. * The drawer slid out by itself unexpectedly, which was frightening. It was then fixed by tightening it shut, making it unusable. These issues made it difficult for me to continue staying in the room, and therefore I had no choice but to check out on the morning of Dec. 5th.

The room served its pupose. We were 40 minutes early on arrival and the clerk wanted to charge us 45 dollars for early arrival check-in. We declined and decided to wait. Then somehow the fee went away because we we first time guests and we checked in. Strange.

Rooms were clean and nice. Mattress was a little outdated. Showers were really good though. My main issue was the WiFi. We got tue corner room farthest from reception area. So we barely received any signal. And when we did, it was really slow. We ended up using our own hotspots for internet connection to our devices.

This place is fine. It is clean, the location is great and the shower is heavenly. That said Ash&9th has the single worst pillows I’ve ever had to use anywhere - including tent camping. I’m used to bad pillows at Motels but these were next level. They’re thick, dense, lumpy balls - they’re not even pillow shaped. It’s clear that no one involved in running the place or doing the ordering has ever bothered to try and sleep with these things or they would know how bad they are. The building is really just an old Motel 6 or Super 8 type motel with a fresh coat of paint. But even Motel 6 puts out some free muffins and yogurt with the coffee in the morning. Here I had to pay $$ for a couple stale Uncrustables from a half empty freezer - and then the guy at the desk gently accused me of shoplifting because he wasn’t paying attention and didn’t hear the beep when my Apple Pay went through at the self-service kiosk. Is any of this a deal breaker on its own? No. But at $200/night (on discount), it starts to feel like I could probably find somewhere a lot nicer for just a little bit more money. Oh and they only gave us one key for three people.
